CONTROLS

Accelerator
the pedal (= a part that you push with your foot) in a vehicle that makes it go faster
Brake pedal
the pedal that you push down with your foot to make a vehicle slow down or stop
Fuel gauge
an indicator of the amount of fuel remaining in a vehicle
Gear Stick
a metal rod that you use to change gear in a car or other vehicle
Handbrake
a device operated by hand that locks into position and prevents a vehicle from moving
Speedometer
a device in a vehicle that shows how fast the vehicle is moving
Steering wheel
a wheel in a vehicle that the driver turns in order to make the vehicle go in a particular direction
Temperature gauge
a device which shows the temperature or heat of something
Warning light
one of the orange lights at the front and back of a car that turn on and off repeatedly to warn other drivers of danger

MECHANICAL PARTS

Battery
a device that produces electricity to provide power for radios, cars, etc
Brake
Brake help you slow down your car and bring it safely to a stop. When you hit the brake, you bring your car to a slower speed.
Clutch
a device that allows turning movement to be sent from one part of a machine to another
Engine
a machine that uses the energy from liquid fuel or steam to produce movement.
Fan belt
a strip of material that moves around continuously to make a fan turn and keep an engine cool.
Exhaust
the waste gas from an engine, especially a car’s, or the pipe the gas flows through
Exhaust pipe
the pipe at the back of a vehicle or on a machine through which waste gas escapes from the engine
Gearbox
a metal box containing the gears in a vehicle
Ignition
the electrical system in an engine that causes the fuel to burn or explode in order to start the engine
Radiator
a device, usually a container filled with water, that sends out heat, often as part of a heating or cooling system
Windscreen wiper
one of two long metal and rubber parts that move against a windscreen to remove rain

LIGHTS AND MIRRORS

one of the red lights at the back of a motor vehicle, that light up when the brakes are used
one of the orange lights at the front and back of a car that turn on and off repeatedly to warn other drivers of danger
Headlamp
a large, powerful light at the front of a vehicle, usually one of two
Indicator
one of the lights at the front and back of a road vehicle that flash to show which way the vehicle is turning
Rearview mirror
a mirror that allows a driver to see what is happening behind their car
Sidelight
either of the two smaller lights fixed on the front of a car
Wing mirror
a mirror on the outside of a car door that allows the driver to see the vehicles that are behind or trying to pass

Aerial
a structure made of metal rods or wires that receives or sends out radio or television signals
Back seat
the seat behind the front seat of a car
Bonnet
the metal cover over the part of a car where the engine is
Boot
a covered space at the back of a car, for storing things in
Bumper
a horizontal bar along the lower front and lower back part of a motor vehicle to help protect it if there is an accident
Child seat
a type of child restraint consisting of a seat with safety features
Front seat
a seat at the front of a vehicle, especially the one next to the driver
Fuel tank
a container inside a vehicle that holds fuel
Glove compartment
a small cupboard or shelf in the front of a car, used for storing small things
Number plate
a sign on a road vehicle that shows its registration number
Seatbelt
a belt that fastens around you when you are travelling in a vehicle or aircraft and holds you in your seat
Spare wheel
A spare wheel is a wheel with a tyre on it that you keep in your car in case you get a flat tyre and need to replace one of your wheels.
Tyre
a thick rubber ring, often filled with air, that is fitted around the outer edge of the wheel of a vehicle
Windscreen
the window at the front of a car, truck, etc.

the system used for keeping the air in a building or vehicle cool
Automatic
An automatic machine or device is able to operate independently of human control
Central locking
a locking system in a motor vehicle that enables the locks of all doors to be operated simultaneously by a single person.
Manual
a book of instructions, especially for operating a machine or learning a subject; a handbook.
a small, round sign that you put in the corner of the front window of your car or other vehicle to show that you have paid the tax to use it
